The rules
A security deposit can be at most one month's rent, and the landlord can't ask for more later.
Interest is owed every year at a rate set by the province: 0% for 2026, 0.5% for 2025 and 1.6% for 2024. If agreed in writing, it compounds yearly and is paid when the tenancy ends.
The landlord must return the deposit, or the balance with a statement of account, within 10 days after the tenant moves out.
