The rules
- A security deposit can be at most three-quarters of the first month's rent (two weeks' rent for weekly tenancies).
- The landlord must keep it in an interest-bearing account. Interest is simple: 0% for 2026, 1% for 2024 and 2025.
- The landlord must return it within 10 days after the tenant moves out, unless they have a claim.
