Quebec deposits
In Quebec, landlords can't take a deposit of any kind.
The rules
- Security, damage, key and pet deposits are all prohibited (Civil Code art. 1904).
- At signing, the landlord can ask only for the first month's rent (the first payment period, at most one month).
- A landlord can't require postdated cheques. They're allowed only if both sides freely agree.
